  • First diary dates from June 29, 1951-September 16, 1951. Charlotte left on the "Homeland" at 11:30am on June 29, docking at Cherbourg on July 8. She took a train to Paris, then continued on to Amsterdam, the Hague, and Brussels before returning to Paris. After touring Paris and vicinity, Charlotte travelled to Geneva, Zurich, St. Gallen, Munich, Nuremburg, Mainz, Cologne, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, and Gothenburg before boarding the "Saga" and sailing to London and Edinburgh. Second diary dates from June 29, 1954-September 4, 1954. Charlotte sailed to Rotterdam on the "Zuiderkruis", then continued on to Haarlem, Zurich, Lucern, Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome, Innsbruck, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, Strasbourg, Paris, Antwerp, and back to Rotterdam before returning home on the "Zuiderkruis". Third diary begins August 9, 1960 and ends September 16, 1960. Charlotte flies from O'Hare in Chicago to Copenhagen where she takes a bus to Amsterdam and continues to Brussels, Paris, Dijon, Geneva, Berne, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Munich, Regensberg, Nurnburg, back to Munich, Vienna, Wurzburg, and back to Copenhagen for the return flight home. Fourth diary covers July 3-August 15, 1967. Charlotte took a plane from Moline, Ill. to Madrid, then continued on to Seville, Granada, back to Madrid, Geneva, Regensburg, Munich, Nurnberg, Prague, Luhačovice, Brno, Vienna, Venice, Barcelona, and back to Madrid for the flight home. Fifth diary covers July 2-August 16, 1968. Charlotte took a plane from Moline, Ill. to Madrid, then continued to Barcelona, Milan, Lucerne, Salzburg, Vienna, Luhačovice, back to Salzburg, Munich, Nuremburg, Bonn, Wurzburg, Donaworth, Regensburg, Geneva, Barcelona and Madrid. Sixth diary dates from June 15-September 1, 1970. Charlotte flies from Chicago to Luxembourg, then on to Trier, Aachen, Bremen, Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfort, Heidelberg, Rotemberg, Nurnberg, Leitheim, Regensburg, Munich, Salzburg, Venice, back to Salzburg and Munich, Vienna, Naples, Florence, Lucerne, Oberammergaw, Innsbruck, back to Lucerne and Luxembourg, then home. Seventh diary dates from July 27-August 16, 1971. Charlotte flies to Tokyo via Moline, St. Louis, Seattle and Anchorage. She then travels to Matsumoto, Nagoya, Pearl Island, Kyoto, and back to Tokyo, then home. Eighth diary dates from July 19-August 9, 1973. Charlotte flies to Copenhagen via Chicago and New York, then flies to Budapest. She travels to Veszprem, Lake Balaton, then back to Budapest, Bucharest, Moscow, Leningrad, then back to Moscow for the flight home via Copnhagen, New York, and Chicago. Ninth diary dates from July 17-August 18, 1974. Charlotte flies from New York to New Delhi. She then travelled to Agra, back to New Delhi, Srinagar Kashmir, Calcutta, Santiniketan, Madras, Pondicherry, Aurobindo, and Bombay before flying to London and then returning home. Tenth diary dates from July 29-August 19, 1975. Charlotte flies to Copenhagen via Chicago and New York, then flies to Johannesburg via Athens, Greece. From there, she visits Salisbury in Rhodesia, Johannesburg, Kruger National Park, Mbabane, Manzini, Emhangeni, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Golden Gate [Highlands] National Park, Bloemfontein, Kimberly, Blantyre, Mount Zamba, and Nairobi before returning home. Eleventh diary dates from June 25-July 24, 1976. Charlotte travelled to Sydney, Australia via Denver, San Francisco, and Nadi (Fiji Islands). From there, she continued to Brisbane, Armidale, Sydney and Canberra, then on to Christ Church, Wellington, and Aukland, New Zealand and the Fiji Islands before heading home. Twelfth diary dated June 25-August 15, 1977. Charlotte flies to Lima, Peru via Chicago, Atlanta, and Miami. She travels from Lima to Cuzco, back to Lima, then to Santiago, Buenos Aires, Asuncion, Rio de Janiero, Brasilia, then home via Miami. The last diary dates from June 22-July 16, 1978. Charlotte flew to Moscow via Chicago and Copenhagen. She then travelled to Samarkand, Bukhara, Tashkent, Irkutsk, Ulaanbaatar, back to Samarkand, then to Bratsk, Moscow, and back to Copenhagen before flying home.


  • Charlotte Durkee was born on June 14, 1912 in Illinois. From 1954-1978 she was a "professor of cello" at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. She died in January of 1983.

Diary for 1976 bound in red with compass and "Travel Diary" in gilt on cover. 1977 diary bound in brown with "Travels" in gilt on cover. 1978 diary bound in green with "Travels" in silver on cover.
