Adams, a private in the 1st Wisconsin Infantry, a lieutenant in the 21st Wisconsin Infantry, and a major in the 47th Wisconsin Infantry. Adams consistently wrote his family detailing army life and battles, including the battle of Chickamauga and General Sherman's "March to the Sea."
