The Board was created under chapter 264, Laws of 1897. In 1903, the agency's duties were further defined by the legislature and it was renamed the State Board of Medical Examiners (Laws of 1903, Chapter 426). From 1915 to 1921, the board oversaw the Committee of Examiners of Registered Nurses (see WIHV88-A57) (Laws of 1915, Chapter 438, and Laws of 1921, Chapter 365). Under state government reorganization in 1967, the Board was attached to the Department of Regulation and Licensing (see WIHV85-A528) and renamed the Medical Examining Board (see WIHV85-A366).
The Board was responsible for conducting examinations for physicians, surgeons, osteopaths, physical therapists, masseurs, and podiatrists and for the granting, suspension, and revocation of licenses and/or certificates for these professions. From 1915-1921 the Board was also responsible for licensing nurses.
