Papers of documentary filmmaker Glenn Silber reflecting his career from about the time he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (ca. 1972) until he joined CBS news (ca. 1990). The bulk of the collection consists of film/video and audio elements for several major independent films produced by Silber and his production company, Catalyst Media, including "An American Ism: Joe McCarthy" (about the anti-communist senator from Wisconsin); "The War at Home" (about the anti-Vietnam War movement in Madison, Wis.); "El Salvador: Another Vietnam" (a film that explores the roots of the civil war in El Salvador); "Atomic Artist" (a portrait of New York painter/sculptor T.A. Price and his unique "atomic art"); and "Troupers" (a portrait of the San Francisco Mime Troupe). Also included are two early Silber films, "The Common Market" and "Grow Your Own." The paper portion of the collection documents the production of these films plus several other projects, such as the proposed film "The Secret That Exploded" (about the Progressive Magazine's publication of Howard Morland's H-bomb article) and "A Piece of the Press" (a documentary concerning the strike at Madison Newspapers, Inc.) among others. The collection includes correspondence (of note are letters from Emile de Antonio and Karleton Armstrong); information about filmmaking at UW-Madison and about public access to television production in Madison; a history of Madison's Greenbush neighborhood written by Elizabeth J. Boardman; grant applications; budget and financial information; background research; proposals; story outlines, treatments, and scripts; transcripts of interviews; tape-recorded interviews of Silber and a recorded discussion between Silber and Emile de Antonio; reviews; and publicity files.
