Some were the result of cultural exchanges with countries such as China, the Soviet Union, and Cuba. Personal, academic, and professional files comprise the remainder of the papers.
The collection includes materials from Hemsley's work with the American Ballet Theatre, Bolshoi Ballet, National Ballet of Cuba, Stuttgart Ballet, Wisconsin Ballet Company, Boston Opera Company, Houston Grand Opera, Metropolitan Opera Company, New York City Opera, The Performing Arts Company of the People's Republic of China, and many other performing companies. Theater files are primarily from productions in Madison, Wisconsin, and in numerous regional theaters across the country.
