Growing up in the 1950s "was golden". But ownership wasn't just an American dream. As Marshall Plan aid rebuilt Europe, cars and other mass produced goods became available for the newly employed. The American-inspired consumer economy sustained by cheap oil lasted 30 years, until the Arab oil embargo and the higher cost of fuel slowed it down.
