The title page is inscribed Charlotte H. Sharpless wife of Samuel J. with the affectionate regards of her Father. Dairy of a fairly well-to-do wife and mother living in Philadelphia. Entries record her family life including illnesses of her children, lots of visiting, social activities, walks, her husband's activities, household tasks, books she is reading etc. In June, the family went to their country house for the summer, returning October 1. The diary includes several pages of household accounts at end. Some pages at end missing.

- The book used is Daily Journal for 1857 ... published annually for the trade.
- Laid in are a counted thread bookmark (damaged) with saying "[Lo]ve the giver" and a letter to Samuel Sharpless from his sister, Anna, from August 1850. The letter is a reply to a letter telling of the birth of a baby and reflecting on the loss of two of Charlotte and Samuel's children the previous year.
- Charlotte was the wife of Samuel J. Sharpless, a merchant in Philadelphia. They had nine children, several of whom died in early childhood. Charlotte's preoccupation with her children's illnesses results from the very early deaths of her first three children. While members of the Sharpless family were Quakers, Charlotte and Samuel appear to be Presbyterian. The genealogy of the Sharpless family is recorded in Genealogy of the Sharpless family by Gilbert Cope, Philadelphia, 1887.
