The film evokes the history of the 6 million men and women who, between 1830 and 1930, abandoned Europe to settle in Latin America. Through their letters, narratives, writings and documents, the filmmakers have created three purely fictional characters, the Frenchman, Ulysses; the Italian, Petro; and the Spaniard, Pilar. To illustrate their respective histories, the filmmakers use documents of diverse origins, recordings, photographs, archival film, together with fragments of feature films set inthe different eras.
