Originally written for puppet theatre, and adapted for the kabuki stage. The full play is comprised of 10 acts, each of which took place at a different spot along the major thoroughfare named Tōkaidō which connects Edo and Osaka/Kyoto region. This part of the play takes place at Numazu. The story is in the form sewamono and tells about divided loyalties and a longstanding vendetta over a murder in which a father and son find themselves on the opposite sides of the conflict. Each loyal to his own cause, they are prevented from revealing their true identities.
