The first kindergarten in the United States was founded by Margarethe Meyer Schurz in Watertown, Wis. in 1856. In 1880, the publicly funded Oshkosh Normal School kindergarten was opened and the first four women to teach there were trained in St. Louis by Susan E. Blow.
