Unpublished historical writings of Hess, editor and publisher of the Arcadia (Wisconsin) News from 1905 to 1941. At La Crosse and Eau Claire are histories of Highway 93 and the townships of Arcadia and Dodge in Trempealeau County; histories of the townships of Waumandee, Cross, and Glencoe and the city of Cochrane in Buffalo County; and a biographical sketch of George Hess, Buffalo County resident, all written by Hess, circa 1959-1963. In Madison is a history of the Evangelical Church in western Wisconsin especially in Trempealeau and Buffalo counties, compiled from records at the Trinity Evangelical Church in Arcadia.

Additional accessions consist of similar materials and include two photographs of Hess (one of him overlooking Barn's Bluff in 1956, the location where he believed Black Hawk was captured); copies of Civil War muster rolls for two Wisconsin infantry companies, Co. K of the 46th Regiment and Co. C of the 30th; and a 15-page typed autobiography of John Ochsner (1832-1920), a member of a Swiss immigrant family, describing his childhood in Switzerland, years spent in Honey Creek (Sauk County), an unsuccessful trip to Iowa and Minnesota in search of less expensive land in 1854, and the loss of family members to cholera in 1855.
