A volume of field notes written June-November 1949 by Brush while a geography student at the University of Wisconsin. Included is information gathered from local residents, business people, and officials in southwestern Wisconsin on the development of hamlets, villages, and towns while Brush mapped the physical layout, land and building use, and trade patterns, especially in Dane, Iowa, Richland, and Sauk counties. Many notes deal with the process of his research, evaluation of sources, and expenses incurred; but they also record his informants' knowledge and opinions of their locales.
