520 | $aObserving an experimental colony of rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) brought to Santiago Island, Puerto Rico, from India, the first portion of this film examines phylogenetic relations, general appearances, postures, locomotion, manipulation, and anatomical characteristics. The monkeys are both terrestrial and arboreal, climbing trees with their hind legs and exhibiting high agility in all ages. The colony is shown swimming, running, brachiating, social and self-grooming, and feeding, storing food in cheek pouches for later. The second portion examines intra-group interactions as well as inter-group interactions between the five colonies on the island and male-female, female-young, male-male, female-female, young-young, and male-young interactions. Parenting behavior featured includes clinging, protecting, and nursing. Reproductive behavior is studied, as well as some homosexual interactions within colonies. Fighting is also shown within and between groups. | |
