Harold Koh, Dean of Yale Law School, spoke on the detrimental effects of the executive branch's effort over time to increase its national security power. He described how the impact of historical events, including Sept. 11, 2001, changed the tide of U.S. policy. He described the current administration as contributing to a shift toward a disregard of checks and balances, mainly with Supreme Court appointments, and called for a return to just policy under law. Introductory remarks were provided by Tom Petri, U.S. House of Representatives, and via a video message by Russ Feingold, U.S. Senate. Petri and Koh agreed that, above all, individual rights should be protected.
